Missing Kupwara man’s body found, handed over to family

Srinagar: The body of a Kupwara man Abdul Rasheed Dar who had gone missing after allegedly picked up by army in December has been found and handed over to the family for last rites, officials said.

They said the body was handed over after identification by the family .

Trehgam Block Development Council chairman Mohammad Abdullah Mir said they received the body at around 4 pm after postmortem.

“Only thing that we know so far is that the body was decayed and apparently buried deep,” he told UNI over phone. ” We were not told from where the body was found.”
The family of Dar was informed by police this morning to identify a body which was recovered from Kupwara, he said

The police, however, are tight lipped about the recovery of the body of the missing youth.

There were allegations against the Army that they picked Dar, a driver by profession from his home in Kupwara’s Kunan village on the evening of December 15, in presence of the Sarpanch and other locals. Next day, the family was informed that he had escaped from their custody.

Family members and locals staged several protests against the disappearance in Srinagar and Kupwara.

After the uproar Kupwara Senior Superintendent of Police Youghal Manhas had told reporters on December 23 that Rasheed was picked up by army for “terrorism related incident” and he “slipped out” while accompanying the soldiers during a raid at a hideout.

National Conference Member Parliament Member Justice (Rtd) Hasnain Masoodi had also called on Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in December and sought his intervention into the matter.

Several people gathered in the Kunan village after the news about the retrieval of the body of Dar.
