Kashmir valley including Gulmarg, Pahalgam receives rain, snow

Srinagar: Most parts of Kashmir valley including tourist hot spots of Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonamarg received rain and snow during the past 24 hours, officials said.

Srinagar and its adjoining areas experienced intermittent rain and snow amid forecast of fairly widespread light to moderate rain, snow over Jammu and Kashmir during the next 24 hours, the Meteorological office said on Wednesday.

It was raining or snowing at most places all across the Kashmir valley amid improvement in minimum temperature though remained below freezing point throwing the normal activities out of gear.

Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, received 8.4mm of rainfall and 1.0 Cms snow, Qazigund on Srinagar-Jammu national highway 17.0mm of rainfall and 11.0 Cms snow, tourist hot spot of Pahalgam in south Kashmir 20.8mm of rainfall and 16.2 Cms snow, Frontier Kashmir district of Kupwara 12.7mm of rainfall, Kokernag 18.4mm of rainfall and 14.5 Cms and famous ski resort of Gulmarg received 54.8mm of rainfall and 21.0 Cms of snow during the past 24 hours, the MeT office said.

Srinagar recorded sub zero temperatures on Wednesday against minus 2.3 degree Celsius Tuesday night. It was 2.3 degrees above normal during this period of the season for the summer capital of J&K.

Gulmarg in north Kashmir remained the coldest place with the minimum temperature recorded at minus 4.6 against minus 9.5 degree Celsius a day ago. It was 3.6 degree Celsius above normal during this period of the season for the valley of meadows.

Qazigund on Srinagar-Jammu national highway had a low of 0.2 degree Celsius against minus 0.6 degree Celsius recorded Tuesday night.

Pahalgam had a low of minus 2.6 degree Celsius against minus 8.6 degree Celsius recorded on Tuesday. It was 4.9 degree Celsius above normal for the tourist resort, while Kokernag recorded a low of minus 0.7 degree Celsius against minus 3.5 degree Celsius.

Kupwara witnessed a low of minus 0.6 degree Celsius against minus 3.4 degree Celsius recorded the previous night. It was 2.3 degrees above normal during this period of the season for the frontier Kashmir district, the MeT office said.
