Kashmir valley bracing for wet weather amid dip in mercury

Srinagar: Kashmir valley is bracing for wet weather even as mercury plunges across Kashmir valley on Wednesday.

Meteorological centre forecast of mainly dry weather till Wednesday evening and possibility of light rain/ snow over isolated places during late night. From January 19-22 Cloudy with chances of light to moderate rain/Snow over scattered to fairly widespread places.

Widespread moderate Snow/(rain in Jammu) & moderate to heavy Snow over middle & higher reaches most likely from January 23-25, and the minimum temperature will rise from Thursday, MeT office said.

It has also issued an advisory for the people living in snowbound Areas to remain alert & cautious while venturing in areas which are vulnerable to Snow Avalanches.

Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, recorded a low of minus 4.3 degree Celsius against minus 2.7 degree Celsius. It was 2.2 degrees below normal during this period of the season.

Pahalgam in south Kashmir after experiencing season’s coldest night at minus 11.8 degree Celsius yesterday showed an improvement of a notch. It was recorded at minus 11.7 degree Celsius on Wednesday. It was 4.5 degree Celsius below normal during this period of the season at the valley of shepherds.

Gulmarg in north Kashmir had a low of minus 11.3 degree Celsius on Wednesday against minus 11.5 degree Celsius recorded the previous night. It was 3.6 degrees below normal during this period of the season for the famous ski resort.

Qazigund, on Srinagar Jammu national highway in south Kashmir dipped to minus 7.4 degree Celsius against minus 5.4 degree Celsius, Kokernag minus 6.3 degree Celsius while the frontier Kashmir district of Kupwara recorded a low of minus 6.2 degree Celsius on Wednesday, the MeT office said.
