Jammu: The normal life was thrown out of gear while air and rail operations remained hit due to dense blanket of fog gripping Jammu on Tuesday morning.
“The foggy weather conditions will prevail for next few days bringing no respite from chill,” a MeT official said adding that the weather will improve thereafter.
Although sun played hide and seek but foggy and chilly conditions disrupted normal life in the winter capital by affecting road, air and rail traffic.
“Due to fog, four flights were cancelled on Tuesday and few delayed,” the Jammu Airport official said.
He added that no flight took off in the morning and none arrived due to poor visibility but the operation resumed in the afternoon after visibility improved.
Meanwhile, a senior railway official said the trains are arriving three to five hours late from their scheduled time.
“The trains operation is badly affected due to dense fog,” said Unchit Singhal, Station Director, Jammu Tawi Railway Station.
“The outstation long route trains arriving few hours late from scheduled time due to which maintenance operation has also affected,” he said, adding, “but we are trying to balance it so that trains arriving late will depart in few hours from scheduled time to prevent rush of passengers at the platforms.”
Moreover, in view of Republic Day arrangements, special measures also being taken and the outsiders and non-travelers being monitored.
He said the passengers are also being advised to follow covid guidelines and SOPs like wearing mask and using sanitizer.
However, the weatherman said visibility in plains likely to improve gradually while on January 11-13, widespread moderate snowfall/rain in plains of Jammu with heavy snowfall over higher reaches is predicted.
In view of prevailing harsh cold conditions, the administration has extended winter vacations in schools till January 16.
Many schools are conducting online classes for primary wings.
People in plains of Jammu especially the roadside vendors were seen burning firewood and charcoal to protect themselves from chill while the business houses have installed warmers and electric heaters to provide respite to the visitors from the harsh weather.
Vehicles moved at snail’s pace on the road with headlights on to avoid any untoward like incident due to fog.
