Cong demands Centre to declare Joshimath situation a national disaster

New Delhi: The Congress on Monday demanded that the Narendra Modi-led government at the Centre declare the current situation in Uttarakhand’s Joshimath as a national disaster.

The demand of the Congress comes a day after Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, PK Mishra held a high-level review of building damage and land subsidence at Joshimath.

“We demand to the Centre to declare this tragedy as national disaster,’ said Congress’ chairman of Media and Publicity Department, Pawan Khera at a press conference referring to the Joshimath situation.

Proper compensation should be given to the affected people from the Prime Minister’s Relief Fund (PMNRF), he demanded.

“The tunnel responsible for this man-made disaster should be closed,” Khera said.

Congress in-charge for Uttarakhand Devender Yadav, who was also present, informed that a delegation of senior Congress leaders including former Chief Minister Harish Rawat will meet CM Pushkar Singh Dhami and Governor Let Gen (Retd) Gurmit Singh on Tuesday and apprise them about the matter.

The Centre on Sunday gave clear tasks to a team of experts from seven central institutions to deal with the situation in Joshimath. The decision was taken in this regard in the high level meeting by the PMO on Sunday.
