Bengal minister should be sacked, arrested for comment on Murmu: BJP

Kolkata: The BJP on Saturday demanded the expulsion of West Bengal Minister Akhil Giri and his arrest for making allegedly derogatory remark about the President of India, even as the state’s ruling Trinamool Congress described it as an “uncalled for remark”.
The BJP also filed an FIR with the Nandigram police station in East Medinipur district against the Bengal Minister for Correctional Administration and held a demonstration and rally in central Kolkata condemning his remark and demanded his expulsion from the Mamata Banerjee-led government and arrest.
In a video that has gone viral, Giri while addressing people in Nandigram on Thursday, is seen saying: “ He (Suvendu Adhikari) said that I am not good-looking. How beautiful is he? We don’t judge anyone by their appearance. We respect the office of the President (of India). But how does our President look?”
TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh said Akhil Giri should not have uttered such a remark and it was uncalled for in the first place.
He, however, said the BJP leadership, including Suvendu Adkhikari had been provoking Akhi Giri, perhaps for his look.
Meanwhile, the BJP on Saturday launched protest demonstrations in the city and Nandigram and elsewhere demanding Giri’s arrest.
BJP MP Saumitra Khan wrote to the National Commission for Women (NCW) seeking action against Giri.
The BJP MP requested the women’s panel to ‘immediately (seek Gir’s) arrest’ Giri and take appropriate action against him and ‘try to dismiss him from the MLA post also’.
Addressing the chairperson of the National Commission for Women, Rekha Sharma, the BJP MP wrote, “Want to inform you that the way Akhil Giri has collectively commented about our Excellency the President. It is a very despicable act, it cannot be forgiven under any circumstances, nor can it be left at any point.”
According to a report, the NCW has sought clarification from Giri for his remark. UNI
