4 People Killed, 26 Injured as Bus Rolls Down into Gorge In Rajouri

Jammu: Four people were killed while 26 others were injured when a bus they were travelling in skidded off the road and rolled down into a deep gorge in Rajouri district on Thursday, officials said.

The bus (JK02CD-9156) was on its way to Rajouri from Surankote Poonch and met with the accident near Deri Ralyote in Charkote Manjakote area of the mountainous district this afternoon.

Soon a massive rescue operation was launched by locals along with police and army.

A police officer told GNS that four persons including the driver and conductor of the bus died in the accident. He identified the deceased as Mohammad Jhangir Khan (37) son of Mohammad Riaz Khan of Dharati Mendhar, Noushad Akhtar (25) wife of Mohammad Sajjad Khan of Dabrote, Raviaz Iqbal (conductor) son of Mohammad Iqbal of Darraba Surankote and Harshiv Choudhary (25) son of Surinder Kumar of Chouklan Nowhsera Rajouri.   He said 26 persons were injured and were shifted to different hospitals.

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed anguish at loss of lives due to a tragic accident in Rajouri.  “Anguished by the loss of lives due to a tragic accident in Rajouri. In this hour of grief, my thoughts are with the bereaved families,” he said in a tweet, adding, “May the injured recover at the earliest. The district administration is providing all possible assistance.”

The accident comes a day after 11 people were killed and 28 others injured after a minubs skidded off the road and fell into a very deep gorge in Sawjian in Poonch district.

Meanwhile, National Conference President Dr Farooq Abdullah and Vice President Omar Abdullah expressed profound grief and sorrow over the loss of lives in the tragic road accident.

In their message the duo prayed for peace to the departed and fortitude to the bereaved to bear the inconsolable loss. They also impressed upon the administration to reach out to the affected with relief and rescue. “The administration must ensure the best of medical care to the injured,” they said.

Former Chief Minister and PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti in a tweet said: “Sorry to hear about the tragic road accident in Rajouri. Condolences to the families who’ve lost their loved ones. Sad that such accidents have become so frequent.”

JKPC president Sajad Gani Lone said: “The accident in Poonch and the subsequent loss of lives is heartbreaking.” “My condolences to the bereaved families,” he added in a tweet. (GNS)
