Hizb militants, who killed 2 TA soldiers, shot dead in Anantnag
Srinagar: Two militants, who were allegedly involved in the killing of two Territorial Army soldiers, were on Tuesday shot dead in a gunfight with security forces in Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir, police said.

A police officer identified the two as Danish Bhat alias Kokab Duree and Basharat Nabi Lone who were affiliated with the Hizbul Mujahideen and were said to be involved in the killings of two TA soldiers- Manzoor Ahmad in 2019 and Mohammad Saleem Akhoon, in 2021.

The Tuesday fighting erupted at Poshkreeri when security forces carried out a cordon and a search operation.

“During the search operation, as the joint search party approached towards the suspected spot, the hiding terrorists fired indiscriminately upon the joint search party which was retaliated effectively leading to an encounter. In the ensuing encounter, two terrorists were killed,” a police spokesman said.

Police said the two were also involved in the killing of two Army personnel Manzoor Ahmad at Sadoora Anantnag on June 6, 2019 and Mohammad Saleem at Bijbehara on April 9, 2021.

Saleem Akhoon, 43, was shot at his residence while he was on leave. A day after his killing, Srinagar-based a Defence Ministry spokesman said the attack was carried by two terrorists of Lashkar-e-Taiba.

Akhoon was awarded the Chief of Army Staff Commendation Card twice and a Northern Army Commander Commendation Card.

Manzoor was a former counter insurgent who later joined the Territorial Army and was shot at his home while on leave.

Police said the two Hizb militants were also involved in killing of two civilians in Jablipora Bijbehara area in 2021.

An AK-56 Rifle, 35 AK rounds, two AK Magazines, a Pistol, a Pistol magazine and two Pistol rounds were recovered from the site of encounter, the spokesman further said.

This was the second gunfight in south Kashmir in the last 24 hours.

On Monday, a brief gun battle broke out in Shopian district. The militants, however, managed to escape and the operation was called off Tuesday after no further contact.
