Sri Lanka may struggle for food: PM

Colombo: New Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has warned that Sri Lanka may have to struggle to get food amid imminent global shortages even as the island nation faces an unprecedented economic crisis. "Sri Lanka is one of the few nations which is expected to go without food in the global food shortage which is expected within this year," Wickremesinghe told Parliament on Thursday.

The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) has named Sri Lanka and Afghanistan among the nations which may not get enough food, he said. Asking Sri Lankans to prepare for the worst, the Prime Minister urged the people to cultivate food crops in all abandoned land including in Colombo city. He said there were many lands belonging to the Railways which were abandoned and can be used to grow food. “We also can have greenhouses,” he said. “It is essential for Sri Lanka to make 2023 a year of agriculture.” UNI
